Definition
Predatory services promising to magically fix credit scores for upfront fees, usually doing nothing illegal that borrowers couldn't do themselves for free. It's the housing market's equivalent of those 'lose weight without diet or exercise' ads.
Example Usage
That credit repair company charged him $2,000 to dispute accurate information that immediately went back on his reportโtotal scam.
Origin
Emerged in the 1990s-2000s as credit scores became increasingly important for mortgage approval
Fun Fact
The Credit Repair Organizations Act prohibits these companies from charging before services are rendered, but enforcement is spotty and scammers constantly rebrand.
