Definition
A high-intensity interval protocol of 20 seconds maximum effort followed by 10 seconds rest, repeated for 4 minutes. Named after the researcher, feared by everyone.
Example Usage
We did Tabata burpees, which is eight rounds of 20-second hell separated by rest periods too brief to remember your own name.
Origin
Developed by Japanese scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata in 1996 studying Olympic speed skaters
Fun Fact
The original Tabata study used stationary bikes at 170% VO2 max, an intensity most people can't sustain—so most 'Tabata' workouts are actually just painful intervals with borrowed credibility.
