Definition
Abnormally rapid breathing, when your respiratory rate decides to run a sprint without consulting you first. It's the body's panic button for 'we need more oxygen, stat.'
Example Usage
The septic patient presented with tachypnea of 32 breaths per minute and required supplemental oxygen.
Origin
From Greek 'tachys' (fast) + 'pnoia' (breathing)
Fun Fact
Normal adult respiratory rate is 12-20 breaths per minute; tachypnea can be one of the earliest signs of sepsis, often appearing before fever or hypotension.
