somnolence

Intermediate 🏥 Healthcare / Medical

Definition

A state of strong desire for sleep or drowsiness, the medical upgrade from 'sleepy' to 'pathologically sleepy.' It's what happens when 'tired' needs a doctor's note.

Example Usage

The patient exhibited somnolence as a side effect of the narcotic pain medication.

Origin

From Latin 'somnolentia' (sleepiness), from 'somnus' (sleep)

Fun Fact

Somnolence is distinct from lethargy (lack of energy) and obtundation (reduced alertness)—the Glasgow Coma Scale has specific criteria to differentiate these levels of consciousness.
