overreaching

Advanced ⚽ Sports / Fitness

Definition

A planned short-term increase in training load that temporarily decreases performance, followed by adaptation and improvement during recovery. It's intentionally digging yourself into a hole with the confidence you can climb back out stronger.

Example Usage

Week three of this overreaching phase has me questioning if I'm building fitness or systematically destroying myself, which the coach says means it's working.

Origin

Formalized in periodization theory in the late 20th century

Fun Fact

Functional overreaching typically requires 1-2 weeks to recover from, while its evil twin 'overtraining' can take months, making the line between smart programming and stupidity thinner than your patience during deload week.
