Definition
The muscle pain and stiffness that peaks 24-72 hours after unfamiliar or intense exercise. The body's passive-aggressive way of reminding you that leg day actually happened.
Example Usage
The DOMS from my first CrossFit class made sitting on the toilet a full-contact sport for three days.
Origin
Medical terminology describing post-exercise muscle damage; became common fitness jargon in the 1980s-90s
Fun Fact
DOMS is caused by microscopic tears in muscle fibers and resulting inflammation, not lactic acid buildup as commonly believed.
