bilateral deficit

Advanced ⚽ Sports / Fitness

Definition

The phenomenon where the sum of your single-leg strength exceeds your double-leg strength, because apparently your nervous system can't fully activate both legs simultaneously. It's your body's way of preventing you from trying to jump over buildings.

Example Usage

Testing showed my bilateral deficit at 15%, which scientifically explains why I'm better at single-leg exercises and generally walking than anything requiring both legs to work together.

Origin

Identified in neuromuscular research in the 1960s-70s

Fun Fact

Bilateral deficit can be reduced through training, which is why Olympic lifters who train bilaterally show less deficit than untrained individuals—practice makes your nervous system stop limiting you.
