zebra company

Intermediate 🚀 Startup / VC

Definition

A startup that aims to be both profitable AND socially responsible, as opposed to unicorns that prioritize growth at any cost. They're real, sustainable, and less likely to leave a trail of layoffs and burned capital.

Example Usage

We positioned ourselves as a zebra company, which attracted impact investors but made traditional VCs question our commitment to 'disruption.'

Origin

Coined in 2017 by Jennifer Brandel, Mara Zepeda, Astrid Scholz, and Aniyia Williams in response to unicorn culture

Fun Fact

The zebra metaphor works on multiple levels—they're real (unlike unicorns), they're black and white (profitable AND mission-driven), and they move in herds (community over competition).
