Definition
A long-form research paper that master's students write to prove they've mastered something, usually the art of procrastination followed by furious last-minute typing. It's a dissertation's younger, slightly less traumatic sibling.

"My thesis adviser said my first draft showed promise, which is academic code for please start over from scratch but I don't want you to cry in my office again."
