Definition
A challenging project or role slightly beyond an employee's current capabilities, designed to accelerate development. Corporate speak for 'we need this done but don't want to hire someone qualified.'
Example Usage
My manager called leading the global rollout a stretch assignment that would accelerate my growth, which is accurate since I've never managed anything global before and am stretched extremely thin.
Origin
Emerged from talent development literature in the 1980s-90s as companies focused on building internal talent
Fun Fact
Research shows stretch assignments are the most effective development tool—when supported properly—but often become setup-for-failure experiences when employees are given challenges without resources or mentoring.
