Definition
Muscle growth from increasing the volume of sarcoplasm (the fluid and energy substrates in muscle cells) rather than contractile proteins. It's the type of growth that makes you look bigger without proportional strength gains, beloved by bodybuilders and Instagram.
Example Usage
High-rep training with moderate weight promotes sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, giving him the pump-chasing size he wanted.
Origin
From muscle physiology research distinguishing growth mechanisms
Fun Fact
The distinct existence of sarcoplasmic hypertrophy as a separate mechanism is actually debated in current research, but broscience declared it fact decades ago.
