Definition
A guard or small unit positioned ahead of the main force to provide early warning of enemy approach, essentially serving as the military's doorbell. They're the ones who see trouble first and live to regret it.
Example Usage
The captain stationed a picket two klicks north to watch the mountain pass.
Origin
From French 'piquet' meaning a pointed stake driven into the ground, later referring to soldiers 'posted' like stakes on guard duty
Fun Fact
Naval picket duty is particularly unpleasant—WWII radar picket ships had such high casualty rates from kamikaze attacks that it was called 'suicide duty.'
