learning styles

Intermediate ๐ŸŽ“ Education / Academia

Definition

The widely-promoted but scientifically-debunked theory that students learn better when instruction matches their preferred modality (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). Education's horoscope: personally appealing, pedagogically useless, yet immortal in faculty development workshops.

Example Usage

The instructor asked us to identify our learning styles, which I humored despite knowing the research shows it's basically academic astrology.

Origin

Popularized in the 1970s by various theorists including Neil Fleming's VARK model (1987)

Fun Fact

Despite dozens of studies showing no evidence that matching instruction to learning styles improves outcomes, 90% of teachers still believe in and use them.
