Human Capital

Definition

A term that manages to sound both dignified and dehumanizing simultaneously, reducing employees to assets on a balance sheet. It's the corporate way of saying "people are resources" without the self-awareness to realize how that sounds.

"HR rebranded itself as the Human Capital department. Nothing says we value our people quite like calling them capital." - A human who is also apparently capital

The formal or informal process of haggling over terms, most famously practiced between unions and management in what's delightfully called 'collective bargaining.' It's the workplace equivalent of a medieval negotiation, except instead of horses and land, you're fighting over dental coverage and whether casual Friday should include shorts. Success is measured by how much each side can claim victory while secretly knowing they compromised on everything.

Total Compensation

The inflated number companies present to make your salary look bigger by adding in health insurance you can't use, stock that hasn't vested, and the "value" of free parking. It's the salary equivalent of counting the packaging as part of the product.

A document showing your salary plus all the benefits, hoping you'll feel rich when you see your 'total compensation' even though most of it isn't actual money. It's HR's way of saying 'you're not underpaid, look at all this health insurance we provide!'

When new hires are paid nearly as much (or more) than experienced employees because market rates have risen but existing salaries haven't kept pace. It's a morale-killing recipe for resentment and quiet quitting.

A financial incentive paid to critical employees to prevent them from jumping ship during uncertain times like mergers, acquisitions, or major restructuring. Essentially bribing people to not abandon the sinking ship—or at least to stay aboard until it reaches port.
