Definition

An emergency code change deployed to fix something that's broken in production right now, usually written in a state of controlled panic. A hotfix is the software equivalent of performing surgery on a moving train.

Example Usage

"Ship the hotfix NOW," screamed the Slack message at 2 AM, and somewhere a developer's phone buzzed next to a half-finished dream about a beach vacation.

Inevitably, everyone uses 'Password123' or their dog's name, then acts surprised when they get hacked. IT departments wage eternal war trying to make users create secure passwords that they'll immediately write on a Post-it note.

To flip the switch, push the button, or trigger something into action—usually something that was dormant before and now has Purpose. Can also mean making something chemically more reactive, if you're into science.

The wonder material that's perpetually five years away from revolutionizing everything—a one-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal pattern that's stronger than steel, more conductive than copper, and apparently impossible to mass-produce affordably. Scientists have been breathlessly promising graphene batteries, graphene electronics, and graphene everything since 2004. Still waiting on that commercially viable graphene iPhone, though.
