Definition
A bluish discoloration of skin and mucous membranes indicating inadequate oxygenation, nature's way of saying your cells really need to breathe. It's one medical sign you definitely don't want to match your scrubs to.
Example Usage
The infant's peripheral cyanosis resolved immediately after supplemental oxygen was administered.
Origin
From Greek 'kyanos' (dark blue) + '-osis' (condition)
Fun Fact
Central cyanosis (seen on lips and tongue) requires at least 5 grams of deoxygenated hemoglobin per deciliter to be visible, which is why it may not be apparent in severely anemic patients despite poor oxygenation.
