Definition
A thick document or website listing every class the university offers, complete with cryptic course codes and descriptions written by people who forgot what it's like to not already understand the subject. Equal parts wish list and false advertising.
Example Usage
The course catalog made 'Introduction to Postmodern Semiotics' sound fascinating, but it turned out to be three hours of incomprehensible lectures weekly.
Origin
Printed course catalogs date to the 19th century; the term 'catalog' comes from Greek 'katalogos' meaning 'list'
Fun Fact
The average four-year university course catalog contains over 2,000 course listings, of which any individual student will take approximately 1.5%.
