Definition
A new and inexperienced service member who hasn't seen combat or completed their first deployment. Still believes the stories about military intelligence not being an oxymoron.
Example Usage
The new lieutenant is a complete cherry—someone needs to teach him which end of the radio to talk into.
Origin
Vietnam War-era slang, possibly from 'cherry boy' meaning virginal or inexperienced
Fun Fact
Cherries are often given the worst duties until they earn respect, in a tradition as old as military service itself.
