Definition
A faculty member who draws the short straw and becomes responsible for managing a department while still being expected to teach, research, and publish. It's all the responsibility of middle management with a fraction of the authority or compensation.
Example Usage
I served as chair for three years, which looked great on my CV but aged me approximately a decade.
Origin
Academic shortening of 'department chair' or 'chairperson'
Fun Fact
Department chairs typically receive a modest course release or stipend that works out to roughly minimum wage for the actual hours spent managing faculty conflicts and administrative crises
