Definition
A tactical maneuver to disengage from the enemy and get the hell out of there in an organized manner, as opposed to running away in panic. It's retreating with style and covering fire.
Example Usage
When the patrol realized they were outnumbered, they executed a break contact drill and withdrew to a defensible position.

Formalized in infantry tactics during Vietnam War era when disengagement from ambushes became a critical survival skill
