Definition
A bureaucratic ankle bracelet preventing students from registering for classes until they've had a mandatory chat with their academic advisor. It's the university's way of ensuring you can't make terrible scheduling decisions without adult supervision.
Example Usage
I tried to register for classes at 2 AM, but an advising hold blocked me until I scheduled an appointment I'd been avoiding for weeks.
Origin
Emerged with computerized registration systems in the 1980s as a way to enforce mandatory advising
Fun Fact
Advising holds are the second most common reason students miss priority registration, right after unpaid parking tickets.
