Definition

A faculty governance body that debates curriculum changes, policies, and academic standards while possessing varying degrees of actual power depending on institutional structure. Democracy theater at its finest, unless the provost actually listens.

Example Usage

The academic senate spent three meetings debating a resolution opposing budget cuts, which the board of trustees promptly ignored.

Adopted from ancient Roman governance terminology, formalized in American universities in the early 20th century
